CBIS is a part-time certificate program at the University of Victoria designed for students seeking to upgrade their professional designations. Delivered by distance learning (online), the adult education program attracts working professionals from a wide range of positions within the public and private sectors. The program aims to build a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge and application of computing and information systems, together with specialized knowledge in the areas of networks, databases, the Internet, business applications of information technology, and education and workplace training.
CBIS is a certificate program for part-time, adult students. You should be motivated to cope with part-time study, and have a basic knowledge of personal computer use and Microsoft Windows.

English Language Requirement
The University requires that applicants for admission whose first language is not English, and who have not studied in Canada or an English speaking country for four (4) recent academic years in an acceptable program from an approved secondary or post secondary institution, must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submit scores with their application. A paper-based TOEFL score of not less than 575, a computer-based TOEFL score of not less than 230, or an internet-based TOEFL of not less than 89-90 is required for admission to the CBIS Program.
Students must have access to a PC capable of running Microsoft Windows 2000 or higher, and Microsoft Office Professional 2002 or higher or LibreOffice.org. Suggested hardware minimum is a Pentium with at least 256 megabytes of RAM and a CD-ROM drive. In addition, students must have access to the Internet to access the online course materials via the course management system Moodle, a personal email account and a Web browser version 6 or higher.
Advanced Standing/Prior Learning Assessment
If you feel that courses you have completed with other institutions are equivalent to any content of the CBIS Program, or you have significant experience in a technical field that directly relates to any of our courses, you may apply for advanced standing. We will assess the documentation that you submit and grant credit towards a course on a case-by-case basis.
A Prior Learning Assessment requires that you submit a complete portfolio to the CBIS Program Coordinator, 250-721-8779. The portfolio typically includes transcripts, course outlines, a chronological record of work experience and other documentation such as job descriptions, performance appraisals, transcripts, samples of work, testimonials and certificates of attendance.
Students may transfer up to three courses from UVic credit programs or from other colleges and universities. Download the PLA form (PDF).
Note: There is a transfer credit fee of CAD$150 per course for those courses not taken through Business, Management and Technology Programs or UVic’s Continuing Studies courses.

There is no admission fee and courses may be taken on a course by course basis without being admitted to the Program.
In order to perform an upgrade to Moodle, there will be an outage on Tuesday, September 1 from 7:30-9:00 am (Pacific Time). You may not be able to log in to your courses during this period.
