Registration/Admission

What pre-requisites are required?

  • An undergraduate degree
  • A minimum of 2 years working experience in the field of Public Health or a combination of education and experience and approval from the Chair of the Steering Committee
  • Successful completion of an introductory statistics course at the undergraduate or graduate level (or equivalent)

How do I apply?

To apply to the program, complete the on-line or paper-based program application form outlining your previous work and educational experience. Submit the application along with: a) verification of your undergraduate degree(s) and b) proof of successful completion of an introductory statistics course (include course outline) at the undergraduate or graduate level (or equivalent), and a c)resume documenting relevant work experience. If you are requesting exemption from PHDA 02 and/or 03 please include documentation of successful completion of coursework and relevant course outline(s) in epidemiology and population health and GIS. A one-time application fee of $120.00 must also accompany your application and is non-refundable if you withdraw. Please make cheque payable to the Division of Continuing Studies. Must I be admitted to UVic?

No, application to the University is not required. Certificate students apply directly to the Division of Continuing Studies and are admitted to the program for non-credit study.

During the first year of delivery, it is anticipated that four courses will be offered between September 2011 and December 2012. Students choosing to select these first four offerings will be able to complete the certificate in one calendar year.

What are the costs of the program?

Here is a sample outline of the costs to attend this program. Please note: course fees are subject to increases.

How do I receive tuition receipts for Income Tax purposes?

Please keep the receipts you receive from Continuing Studies. This is the portion of the tuition for each course that you pay directly to the program; it is income tax deductible. At the end of February, accounting will mail you an income tax receipt for the balance of the tuition you paid during the previous calendar year.

Is Financial Aid available?

NetLink ID

All students will need to set up a Netlink ID in order to access the on-line instructional site (Moodle)

If you do not already have a NetLink ID, you can follow the steps at https://netlink.uvic.ca/ to create one. To create your NetLink ID, you will need your UVic student number (V00 number) and date of birth.

If you already have a UVic NetLink ID, you may want to use the Status link on the NetLink website to confirm you remember your NetLink name and password.

Do I have access to the University Library?

Yes, you have the same access to the library as all students at UVic. Library services are accessed electronically by NetLinkID. If you choose to visit the library in person to select hard copy texts you will need to get a student card from the University Centre.

How Do I Register for the Courses I Want to Take?

You will register for the PHDA courses through the Division of Continuing Studies. You will need to access your Netlink ID to check your course status, access library services and enter each moodle course site.

How many hours will I need to set aside for each course?

Online course work is designed to provide flexibility for scheduling your study hours. Although each individual’s study requirements vary, it is estimated that you will need to spend between 8 and 12 hours per week to participate in online work , complete readings and associated lab assignments.

What courses are currently available?

This new program is being launched in September 2011. During the 2011 to 2012 year, a total of four courses will be offered. The anticipated start dates are:

  • Working with Administrative Data – September 2011 to December 2011
  • Epidemiological Statistics – January 2012 to April 2012
  • Population Health and GIS – May 2012 to July 2012
  • Spatial Epidemiology – September 2012 to December 2012

Additional elective courses planned for 2013 include:

  • Health Services Program Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Longitudinal Analysis and Multi-level Modeling of Population Health Data
