To complete the Certificate in Aboriginal Language Revitalization (CALR) , you take six core courses (9.0 units) offered in two immersion institutes at UVic and the En’owkin Centre, and three elective courses (4.5 units) based on your personal interest. Core courses and elective courses are summarized below and then listed by course number with links to full descriptions.
You participate in the following coursework to complete your Certificate:
6 courses (9.0 units) of required core courses that build your foundation of knowledge and skills. These courses introduce you to key concepts, issues, and best practices in language revitalization and develop your ability to create meaningful, appropriate and practical language preservation, revitalization, and teaching programs.
3 courses (4.5 units) of elective courses that you select based on personal interest. These courses are drawn from elective offerings at UVic and the En’owkin Centre, or through courses offered in community settings. You may apply to transfer credit for elective courses taken from other programs or colleges and universities; please consult program office for details.
If you are not a fluent speaker in an Indigenous language, at least 1.5 units of your elective course work must be an indigenous language course, in order to strengthen your own language learning and your knowledge of the processes and experiences involved with learning an Aboriginal language.
To satisfy this requirement, you must complete at least one course offered under LING 159, 259 or 359 (see above ) or an equivalent course at a local college or university.
If you have already completed a local college or university course in an Aboriginal language and have not used the course towards another degree program, you can arrange to transfer the credit towards the CALR program. If you are a fluent speaker or have taken a course for credit but used it already towards another program, you can arrange to challenge this elective language course requirement. Find out more here.
