Canadian Studies Diploma and Certificate Programs

Diploma

The diploma is a credit program and requires admission to both the Canadian Studies program and the University of Victoria. Courses completed as part of the diploma may be transferred towards an undergraduate degree.

Requirements

The diploma requires a minimum of 12 courses equivalent to 18 credit units (about 470 hours of course work). Diploma students are required to complete three core courses (CS101, CS102, and CS200) in Canadian Studies (4.5 units) and choose the remainder of their courses in subjects related to Canada offered by the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts at UVic.

With the permission of the Canadian Studies Program Steering Committee, you may transfer up to 4.5 units of appropriate credit courses completed at UVic or other accredited universities towards your diploma, as long as you have not previously used these credits towards a degree. Students may take up to four years to complete the diploma and must attend UVic for a minimum of three semesters (two of which must be consecutive).

Certificate

The certificate is a non-credit program and requires admission to the Canadian Studies program, but not to the University of Victoria. Students are expected to complete all course assignments and will be graded, just as in courses taken for credit in the diploma option.

Requirements

The certificate requires eight courses equivalent to 12 credit units (about 312 hours of course work). Certificate students are required to complete two core courses in Canadian Studies (CS101 and CS102) and choose the remainder of their courses in subjects related to Canada offered by the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts at UVic. Students may take up to three years to complete the certificate and must attend a minimum of two consecutive semesters at UVic.

Individual Courses

If space is available, students may register in core Canadian Studies courses for credit or non-credit, without having to be enrolled in the diploma or certificate program. To receive credit for these courses, students must be admitted to the University of Victoria.
