CBIS Program Change

In order to align CBIS with other courses and certificate programs offered across the Division of Continuing Studies, the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies has approved a change to the CBIS program requirements.

As of January 1, 2010, the CBIS program comprises five core and four elective courses. All CBIS courses have been extended to 13 weeks. Students who began the program prior to January 1, 2010 should visit http://www.cbis.ca/change.

Course Materials and Software

Textbooks required for CBIS distance courses should be ordered or picked up at the UVic Bookstore as soon as possible, as it may take up to three weeks for the order to be processed.  You can order online at www.uvicbookstore.ca or pick-up the materials in person at the UVic Bookstore.

If you have any questions about your order you may contact the bookstore at:

UVic Bookstore
University of Victoria
PO Box 2200 STN CSC
Victoria, BC V8W 3H6

Phone:  250-721-8337
Email: disted@uvic.ca

Required software for CBIS courses can be purchased through the UVic Computer Store. All registered CBIS students are eligible for educational discount pricing. See http://www.uvicbookstore.ca/tech/ for details and ordering instructions.

Returns: Should you withdraw from a course, textbooks in mint condition and accompanied by the original receipt will be accepted by the bookstore following the return guidelines published on the website at www.uvicbookstore.ca. Textbooks purchased in shrink-wrapped packages will not be accepted for refund if the shrink-wrapping has been removed.

Used books will be available for some courses.  Please visit the bookstore’s website for details about used books and textbook buyback for distance education students at www.uvicbookstore.ca.

Note: If you call the UVic Bookstore to inquire about books for a course, identify yourself as a distance student and quote the course code.  You will receive the answer to your inquiry much faster if you provide the course code.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU): Students registered through TRU are advised that course materials are not included in the tuition and will not be shipped automatically; please order your course materials from www.uvicbookstore.ca as soon as possible.

If you have questions about current textbook editions or software versions, please contact the BMT office at 250-721-8072/8073 or email cbis@uvcs.uvic.ca.

Students in library

Access to UVic Library

Students who are registered in CBIS courses have access to the UVic Library for the duration of their courses. The Library provides access to e-books, online journals, etc.  http://library.uvic.ca. One of the services we would like to point out is access to Safari Books Online: http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com.ezproxy.library.uvic.ca/. Safari Books online via the UVic Library provides access to over 4,000 technology related titles. You need your valid UVic NetLink id in order to access this service from off campus.

UVCS Bursary Program

Each term the Division of Continuing Studies offers bursaries totalling CDN $1,000 to assist learners in furthering their education. Bursaries will be awarded to learners who can display evidence of a commitment to lifelong learning and who can demonstrate financial need.

If you are interested in applying for a bursary, please complete the bursary application form. The application deadlines are January 15 and August 31. If you have questions about the bursary program, please phone 250-472-4747.

CBIS Program Planner

To assist you with CBIS study options, we developed a study planner that allows you to quickly check off courses you wish to take and/or may have already taken. We arranged courses by Core, Technology and Analysis Electives, Business and Technology Electives, and Education and Workplace Training Electives. A copy of the form is attached at the end of this newsletter.

Generally speaking most core courses are offered twice a year and electives on a demand basis, likely once a year.

If you wish to make an appointment with a Program Coordinator to discuss your study plans, course details or have questions about a Prior Learning Assessment, please contact our office.

As always, if you have any program suggestions or comments, feel free to send an email to cbis@uvcs.uvic.ca or phone 250-721-8072.

Note: Similar program planners are also available online for the Certificate and Diploma in Business Administration (CBA/DBA) at http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/business/forms/.

Your Online Student Record

Please keep your online student record updated at all times by either contacting our office or updating it yourself via “My Account” and “Edit Profile” at http://www.continuingstudies.uvic.ca. We have had quite a few students last term with invalid email addresses or mailing addresses. Thank you!

Note: You can view your unofficial transcript from this link as well.

General Information

How to Register

Visit our registration website at www.continuingstudies.uvic.ca/register/dcs/.

Phone, Mail or Fax

Call 250-472-4747 and our friendly registration staff will help you. You can also download our registration form to register by mail, by fax or in person.

Distance education students: Please note that you are responsible for ordering any texts from the University Bookstore for courses that require them. If you are registered in a course with only Web-based readings, you will be contacted prior to the course start date with information on how to access the course site. Call 250-721-8072 if you have not received this information by the first day of the course.

Refund and Withdrawal Policy

A full refund will be issued if you withdraw from a course prior to the start date of the course. A course refund, minus a CDN$40 administration fee, will only be provided within six calendar days after the course start date for part-time courses.

The Division of Continuing Studies reserves the right to cancel/reschedule courses or other offerings without notice, and to establish special regulations for admission to non-degree programs or courses.

If a course or offering is cancelled or rescheduled, the liability of the Division of Continuing Studies is limited to a full refund of the course fee, or, if desired, transfer to another offering.

Depending on payment method, a refund will be either mailed to you or credited to your credit card. The Canada Revenue Agency requires that we request the return of your original receipt.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

The CBIS Program recognizes that adults often have learned a great deal through the workplace and other experience. PLA offers the opportunity to have that learning assessed, and for you to receive appropriate credit toward a program of study.

For more information, please see the PLA information (under Evaluation) on the CBIS website.
