If you have already taken academic credit courses in an Aboriginal language or in topics related to language preservation and revitalization, or if you wish to do so at a local college or university, these courses may be considered for transfer credit to satisfy up to 3.0 units of elective credit. If you have already completed course(s) that you think can be transferred, please note this on your Application to the Certificate Program, provide detailed course descriptions along with transcripts, and consult with the academic advisor.
If you intend to take courses for transfer credit in the future, you should also provide the academic advisor with a detailed course description along with an explanation of the ways in which the course meets your personal learning objectives and is equivalent to elective offerings in the program.
To transfer credit, you will need to provide an official sealed transcript from the college or university that offers the course. It should indicate the course information and the grade that you earned.
NOTE: If your transcript comes from a Canadian university or college outside British Columbia you will be required to pay a document evaluation fee of CAD$40 to Records Services.

The Course Challenge process is intended to allow you to receive up to 1.5 units of elective credit, based on your proficiency in an Aboriginal language. If that proficiency has been gained through the completion of formal coursework at a local college or university, the most straightforward way to have it recognized as elective credit is to transfer that credit. However, if your proficiency has been gained through life experience, you can challenge LING 159 or 259 as described below.
To challenge a course, you are required to complete an "Application for Course Challenge" and a "CALR Course Challenge Form" specifically for the LING 159 or LING 259 courses. The CALR Course Challenge form is completed by a Local Language Authority certifying that you have achieved a degree of proficiency in that language. As part of the course challenge process, you will be required to a fee equivalent to 50% of the tuition assessed for a 1.5 unit course. Based on this application, the Academic Advisors to the Certificate in Aboriginal Language Revitalization will determine if your course challenge is successful, establish the equivalency to LING 159 or 259 and arrange for the credit to be entered on your academic record.
You may request the forms from our office. Please have your Language Authority complete and sign the LING 159 / 259 challenge form and return it to us with the course challenge application and fee.
You are urged to complete the course challenge process upon admission to the certificate program so that you can plan your elective requirements accordingly.
