Please see the following options for our PSC in TEFL, and non-credit TEFL course options.

All courses are offered subject to minimum enrolment.

The Professional Specialization Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (PSC in TEFL) is designed for EFL teaching professionals who are non-native speakers of English. UVic Convocation Certificates are issued upon successful completion of this program.

The PSC in TEFL is a non-credit, professional development certificate traditionally offered in July or August on campus at the University of Victoria. Sixty hours of classroom instruction are delivered over a three-week period (four hours per day, five days per week). Additional instructional hours come in the form of afternoon seminars, which focus on discrete areas of teaching in an English as a foreign language context. Socio-cultural activities are also included in the three-week face-to-face on campus component.

Instruction is delivered online when the international teachers return to their own countries, schools and classrooms. The online component of the PSC in TEFL is delivered over approximately 9 weeks. Successful completion of both components ensures participants of a Professional Specialization Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and alumni status at the University of Victoria.

Starting in 2012, we will offer an open summer program (July/August) at UVic to meet the needs of individual international teachers who would like to attend independent of a cohort group. However, we strongly encourage district offices of education to send groups (cohorts) of teachers in order to take advantage of reduced program and accommodation rates. In either case, we hope to see a very rich mixture of cultures attending this teacher professional development opportunity at UVic in the summer of 2012.

We can also customize a PSC in TEFL program to meet your needs, including delivery in your country to a cohort of TEFL teachers (20 minimum).

We can customize a TESOL course to meet your needs, including delivery in your country to a group of TEFL teachers (20 minimum).

If you would like more information about program delivery options or are interested in a customized program for your teachers’ needs, please contact Roger Howden, Senior Program Director, Continuing Studies in Education: rahowden@uvic.ca

ON CAMPUS, EDTE 125, 120 hours, Fee-$1195, includes materials

Registration Deadline: August 24 2012 (offered subject to minimum enrolment)

Schedule: September 11 to December 20 2012 (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6 to 9 pm, plus five Saturdays, 9 am to 4 pm)

For those with an undergraduate degree seeking TEFL methodology, this non-credit course (120 hours) is scheduled on campus September to December 2012.

This 120-hour TEFL course is for those with native-like English fluency skills who seek an "authentic" teaching experience where they will take full responsibiliy for a group of learners in a foreign language context in an overseas country. It provides the skills needed to teach confidently and to help in finding employment with a respected school. It offers a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge which will be used to construct practical, hands-on activities for immediate use in the English as a foreign language context.

Internalization of theory and application to practice will result from numerous opportunities to create and deliver experiential micro-teaching sessions in a safe and friendly environment. It is recommended for those possibly seeking a career path in teaching ESL. The skilled, highly qualified and internationally experienced teachers will facilitate this process while acknowledging and respecting the individual levels of knowledge and experience that participants bring to the course.

Upon successful completion, a non-credit Certificate of Completion and Transcript will be issued by the Division of Continuing Studies.

ON CAMPUS, EDTE126, 36 hours, Fee-$495, includes materials  (offered subject to minimum enrolment)

Registration Deadline: August 24 2012 (offered subject to minimum enrolment)

Schedule: September to October 2012, 6 to 9 pm, one evening per week, on campus

EDTE 126 is designed for co-op students looking for survival skills in an overseas placement, and who might be offered an opportunity to work in a limited capacity as classroom instructor or aide.

This course is for those with very little knowledge and experience as a classroom teacher. The benefits of learning from experienced experts will remove much of the apprehension around the idea of facing your first group of eager students. Classroom management, organization skills and the establishment of daily routines for the English as a foreign language context will be an integral part of the course. The acquisition of key principles related to second language teaching, learning, methodology and pedagogy will result in confidence to adjust to and succeed in your new environment.

Many native English speakers embarking on teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) or as a second language (TESL) are unprepared for the demands of a changing marketplace or the stresses of living and working overseas. UVic’s 36-hour TEFL course will give you the skills you need to teach confidently and help with finding employment.

Upon successful completion, a non-credit Certificate of Completion and Transcript will be issued by the Division of Continuing Studies.

Our Instructors for EDTE125 and EDTE126

Dr. Sandra Fotos - Sandy (EdD, Applied Linguistics) has been a professor of English as a second/foreign language and second language acquisition processes for many years and in many countries, and has edited professional journals and presented at international conferences. She has published books and articles on teaching English, second language acquisition, bilingualism and CALL (computer assisted language learning).

Sandy says, “Today, because of its global use for international communication among non-native speakers, EFL is often referred to as English as an International Language (EIL) or English as a lingua franca (ELF). This reflects its crucial role in international affairs. To teach English in a foreign culture is not only a thrilling educational experience for the teacher, but also promotes world unity and understanding.”

A partial list of her publications is available at http://www.asij.ac.jp/japan/asij_authors/e_g/fotos.htm

Ms. Marilyn Schick - Marilyn Schick has a BA in English Literature, RSA certificate (CELTA) and an MA in Teaching. She has been teaching ESL since 1992 and her foreign teaching experience includes Indonesia, South Korea and Japan.

In addition, Marilyn managed an ESL institute for four years at Hanyang University in South Korea. She has held various teaching positions covering all levels of English
proficiency. Also, she has designed and taught TESL courses to Canadian students, to Mexican, Japanese, Puerto Rican and Thai teachers and, as a result, she is well acquainted with methodology and different techniques of teaching in ESL/EFL classrooms.

Marilyn says, “Working with students in the classroom and watching them create and teach gives me the greatest fulfillment in my job. I love it!”
