PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Monthly English

Description

Monthly English programs are available from September until May. For summer programs from June until August, see: Monthly Language & Culture

These programs focus on speaking and listening skills.  They combine challenging classroom instruction with exciting social and cultural activities. Students participate in and discuss Canadian culture using a curriculum based on cross-cultural communication.

Program Features:

• 20 hours of classes per week
• Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced class levels
• Focus on speaking and listening skills
• Unlimited access to UVic’s Computer Assisted Language Laboratory, libraries and computer labs
• A schedule of weekly social and cultural activities
• Homestay accommodation (September - June); Dormitory accommodation (July-August)

Entrance Requirements

All English Language Centre students must:

• Be 18 years old by the program start date
• Meet Canadian Visa requirements
• Buy medical insurance for the duration of the program
• Read, understand and abide by all program guidelines
• Have a basic knowledge of English: to find out if your level of English meets our basic requirement, take a free test.

Evaluation

Students will receive a progress report and a Certificate of Participation at the end of the program. The Certificate of Participation will be awarded to students who attend at least 80% of the scheduled classes.  Students who miss 20% or more classes (including late arrival and/or early departure) will not receive the Certificate of Participation.  All students will receive a Record of Grade (report card) at the end of the program.

This is not a credit course and does not guarantee admission to the University of Victoria.

Format

Program Schedule

Monday - Thursday

• 9am - 12pm, 1:15pm - 3:10pm Intensive English Classes

Friday                                                                                                                                                              

• Optional Activities: these may include a conversation club and visits to local attractions such as the Royal BC Museum and Goldstream Park.

Weekends  

• Optional weekend trips are offered at a minimal cost. They are led by Cultural Assistants and may include visiting Butchart Gardens, whale watching, skiing and trips to Vancouver.
