PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Bonjour and welcome to the French Language Diploma Program (FLDP)
This program is for you if at least one of the following statements describes you:
Whether you are at a beginner level or have already reached an intermediate to advanced level, this program offers a small classroom setting (maximum 18 students per class) allowing instructors to optimize direct contact with each student.
The French Language Diploma Program consists of five levels; each level consists of two terms. Although the first term starts in September and the second term starts in January, you will be able to enter a course at midpoint in January if your level of proficiency permits.
Free level assessment tests can be booked prior to the commencement of each term for those who have already some experience in the French language. If you consider yourself a true beginner, you can register directly into the first level in September.
This program will allow you to define your own objectives by giving you the flexibility to take a single course, aim for a specific level or go all the way to level 5 and the Diploma. Each level is designed to focus on both oral and written communication. Levels three to five will also foster your ability to think in French.
Students are evaluated based on their assignment grades, their participation in class, and the oral and written exam that takes place at the end of each term.
Beginner and near-beginner levels are designed to give you a solid foundation in all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), using a variety of communicative and structural activities to develop your vocabulary and grammar in a meaningful way so that you can function in basic everyday situations.
Intermediate and high-intermediate levels are designed to take you to the next level in the four language skills by deepening your command of more complex structures and a richer vocabulary so that you can function in a wider range of situations (narrating past events, making hypotheses, making comparisons, etc.)
Students in levels three and four have the option of registering for the core 3-hour class by itself or adding their respective 1.5 hours conversational component FLDP301 or FLDP401 for an additional $159 per term.
Advanced level is designed to help you attain a high level of proficiency in the language with the aid of various media, such as textbooks and magazines; CD's and DVD's; as well as class discussions and oral presentations.
Successful completion of both terms of FLDP500 will be recognized by the awarding of a diploma under the authority of the Senate of the University of Victoria. Since its inception in 1971, 422 students have reached the diploma level.
