About the FSL in Middle School Credential

The Lower Island School District Credential in Teaching French as a Second Language (FSL) in Middle School is a non-credit credential offered by UVic Continuing Studies in Education and the Greater Victoria School District. This credential allows certified teachers to gain the skills and methodological knowledge to be highly effective middle school FSL teachers. Teachers will also be provided with the assistance they require to achieve an adequate level of French fluency.

Eligibility

This credential is open to teachers from any B.C. school district but will meet specific School District 61 needs and be acknowledged by this district when selecting teachers.

Bursaries

Currently certified teachers are eligible for support from the Federal French Language Bursary Program, through the BC Ministry of Education French Programs. These bursaries are administered by the applicable office in the Division of Continuing Studies. Bursary applications are generally distributed upon course registration.

French Teaching Requirements in BC

The BC Ministry of Education requires Core French in grades 5 to 8. Greater Victoria School District requires French in grades 4 to 8. This credential ensures that teachers have functional French fluency and are able to use the limited range of structures and vocabulary required for Middle School French instruction.
