ELC CD-ROMs
Description
The English Language Centre has created a series of CD-ROMS interactive learning resources for those who wish to improve their English language proficiency.
- Business English: Meetings - This dynamic CD-ROM is designed to help non-native English speakers learn about the language and culture of North American business meetings. Intermediate-level English language learners will find this CD to be a feature-packed, essential resource.
- North American Idioms - This interactive CD-ROM introduces 192 frequently used North American idioms, explaining cultural context and allowing users to practice the idioms in realistic settings improves oral fluency.
- Jason's World and Judy's World - These CD-ROMs are the University of Victoria's specially developed audio soap opera series. Jason's World (for intermediate ESL students) and Judy's World (for intermediate/low-advanced ESL students) were created for classroom use to provide students with the opportunity to practice their listening skills, increase their vocabulary, and discuss important and controversial social issues. The Teacher's Manual and Student Workbook both come with an audio CD and answer key.
Format
Each of the ELC's selection of CD-ROMs has been carefully researched and developed in a university environment, to provide English language learners with a unique and easy-to-use learning product. Here is what they include:

Jason's World and Judy's World CD-ROMs Format and Features
- Jason’s World is an eight-episode soap opera about the life of Jason which looks at such life challenges as relationships, work and school issues, parental pressures, and depression. Intermediate level students will benefit from the vocabulary exercises, discussion and prediction activities, and thought-provoking questions.
- Judy’s World is an eight-episode soap opera about Judy and her challenges with life. Issues which are raised in the soap opera include unexpected pregnancy, abortion, child-raising, and life priorities. Upper intermediate and advanced level students will increase their vocabulary and discussion skills while improving their listening skills as they immerse themselves in the lives of Judy and her friends.
