Application Information and Program Policies

This part-time, intensive course provides students with an opportunity to focus on improving their academic writing skills, in particular, writing effective paragraphs. Good paragraph writing leads to good essay and report writing. Students will work on writing effective topic sentences, mastering a range of sentence structures and achieving sentence variety, developing coherence and using clear, concise language to express ideas. In addition, students will develop their reading proficiency, work on a variety of paragraph types (e.g. narration, description, process, persuasion) and practice their skills in structured in-class writing activities.

All English Language Centre students must:

Evaluation

Students will receive a progress report and a Certificate of Participation at the end of the program. The Certificate of Participation will be awarded to students who attend at least 80% of the scheduled classes.  Students who miss 20% or more classes (including late arrival and/or early departure) will not receive the Certificate of Participation.  All students will receive a Record of Grade (report card) at the end of the program.

This is not a credit course and does not guarantee admission to the University of Victoria.
