This course traces the development of the modern musical from its rise out of British vaudeville in the late 19th century to the grand American spectacles of the 1950s. Iconic photographs, significant recordings of major stars and video footage of classic performances will be used as a jumping-off point for discussion of these works within the complex social context of their times. Some of the works to be discussed include: Showboat, with the song “Old Man River,” Lady Be Good, with the hit “Fascinating Rhythm,” Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, The King and I, and many rare, surprising gems that you’ll be glad to discover!
