The Archaeology of Ancient Africa

... at Mary Winspear Centre

While Egypt may be the jewel of Africa in terms of its archaeological heritage, the rest of the Dark Continent has yielded just as rich a legacy from our past. Although less well known, some of the most important archaeological sites scattered throughout Africa go back much further than any of those in Egypt—in some cases, as far back as the dawn of humankind.
Our journey of discovery begins in a land that at one time rivaled Egypt in glory and power, as we follow the Nile through ancient Nubia, birthplace of pharaohs. We will then investigate the greatest archaeological site south of the Sahara—Great Zimbabwe—and also visit South, West and Central Africa, before exploring archaeologically-rich North Africa in a quest that spans millions of years of human history.
