Teaching FSL in Middle School

Teaching FSL in Grades 5-8 is a non-credit course designed for general classroom teachers wanting to improve their skills related to teaching French as a second language. Participants will be introduced to the provincial Core French curriculum documents and exposed to a variety of instructional strategies, methods of assessment, and resources recommended for the second language classroom.  The course takes a practical approach with participants completing assignments and creating resources that can be implemented in BC classrooms.

This course is part of the Lower Island School District Credential in Teaching French as a Second Language in Middle School, described below.

The Lower Island School District Credential in Teaching French as a Second Language in Middle School, offered by School District #61 (Greater Victoria) in collaboration with Continuing Studies in Education, is a non-credit program for certified teachers of grades 6 to 8.

By successfully completing this credential, teachers will enhance their French fluency and gain the methodological knowledge to be highly effective middle school FSL teachers. This credential is open to teachers from any BC school district. It is recognized by the Greater Victoria school district and other lower Island school districts (#62, #63) as a reliable assessment of highly developed teacher skills and training to teach FSL in middle school. Participants may be eligible for support from the Federal French Language Bursary Program, through the BC Ministry of Education.

The credential consists of successful completion of an intermediate or advanced level of La Maison Française or equivalent, and the methods course (Teaching French as a Second Language in Middle School) by distance (online) format.
