Special Topics in Aboriginal Language Revitalization: Methods for Immersion Language Teaching and Learning

LING 187 (1.5 units)

Immersion formats create highly effective environments in which endangered aboriginal languages can be taught and learned. This course provides an introduction to immersion teaching and learning principles and techniques, and explores three practical immersion methods in order to create a foundation for practical applications in a variety of situations and programs. Topics include the nature of full immersion in real-world learning, and the modifications required for delivery within structured delivery environments.

Instructor

Maxine Baptiste, BA, MA (linguistics), is Language Director at the En’owkin Centre and Associate Professor in Aboriginal Education at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Her teaching and research areas include indigenous education, language revitalization, policy and planning, and conversational and discourse analysis. She is a PhD candidate in Language and Culture at the University of Arizona. Maxine works to revitalize her Okanagan language.

Special Guest:

Jeannette Armstrong, Executive Director of the En’owkin Centre, is an internationally renowned writer, teacher, artist, activist and PhD candidate at the University of Greifswald. Jeanette plays many leadership roles in the province and Indigenous community and among many other things, is a champion and advocate for her Okanagan language.
