Relational Database Management Systems

CBIS Technology and Analysis Elective, by Distance

Program Options: CBIS TRU

This online course will provide you with an understanding of the design, creation, maintenance and management of a relational database management system (RDBMS).

You will learn how to create and access data using Structured Query Language (SQL), the programming language used by most large relational database management systems such as Oracle, IBM DB2, MS SQL Server and Sybase, as well as open-source products such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Prerequisite: Computing Concepts and Database Concepts or equivalent experience

Objective

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• explain relational database table and field structures
• understand sound table and field design
• explain how tables are related using key columns
• learn the syntax and guidelines involved in writing SQL statements
• use basic SQL commands
• understand data selection and the operators used in queries
• restrict data retrieval and control the order in which it is displayed
• convert data from one data type to another
• write sub-queries and understand why they are used
• use aggregate functions to summarize data
• use group functions
• join multiple tables and understand the different types of joins used
• use insert, update, and delete statements to manipulate data
• understand basic Data Definition Language (DDL) syntax
• understand basic Data Control Language (DCL) syntax

Format

By Distance

CBIS courses are 13 weeks in duration. Students login to the course and communicate with the instructor and fellow students via the course management system Moodle. For further information about Moodle, visit the Moodle Startup Kit at http://distance.uvic.ca/onlinehelp/tutorials/moodle/.

Requisites

• Technical Requirements

  Students will install the most recent versions either Oracle, SQL Server Express or MySQL. 
  To participate in this course, students must have the following:

  Hardware Computer:

  • Personal Computer (PC), Intel or compatible Pentium III 600 MHz (1 GHz or faster is recommended)
  • CD-ROM drive

  Memory (RAM):

  • Oracle Express: 256 MB minimum, 512 MB or more is recommended
  • SQL Server Express: 192 MB minimum, 512 MB or more is recommended  
  • MySQL: 256 MB minimum, 512 MB or more is recommended

  Hard disk space:

  • Oracle Express: 1.6 GB minimum
  • SQL Server Express: 525 MB minimum
  • MySQL: 525 MB minimum

  Communications:

  • Cable or ADSL service is recommended

  Software Operating system:

  • Oracle Express Edition
    • Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later
    • Windows Server 2003
    • Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or later
    • Vista and Windows 7 (installs must be set to Windows XP compatibility)
  • SQL Server Express:
    • Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional with SP4
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 or later
    • Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter editions with Service Pack 1 or later

  Important Note: The Oracle Express Edition, the MySQL  Community Server, and the Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition plus supporting software must be downloaded by students. A high-speed, stable connection is required. You can download but do not install the software before the course starts. The RDBMS Unit 1 provides both download and installation instructions and the Moodle site may have forum posts about installation issues if any.
