Certain musical works are so extraordinary that they have had the power to change the course of music history. Their premieres were not always so kindly received. Some works hardly received any notice at all; others caused a riot in the street. This course looks at a number of (in)famous first nights and defining moments in music history including Handel’s Rinaldo, Beethoven’s Eroica, Schubert’s Winterreise, Berioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Mendelssohn’s re-launching of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Together we will investigate the background to these compositions and discuss the musical features that mark these works as among the greatest achievements of Western art.
