More Programming with Java

Eligible for .5 Tech & Analysis elective in CBIS, by Distance

This seminar builds on Programming Concepts with Java by introducing students to more advanced GUI (Graphical User Interface) Development. In addition, participants learn to write and read data to sequential data files, use additional Collections and Strings, implement more advanced Classes and Interfaces (libraries), access Databases using Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and create a Web Application using Java Servlets. Each of the six Units includes practical examples of Application and Applet development in hands-on exercises and assignments.

Prerequisites: Computing Concepts and Programming Concepts with Java or equivalent experience

Objective

Upon completions of the course, students will be able to:

• Understand the Java Foundation Classes (JFC)
• Use Java's Abstract Windows Toolkit (AWT)
• Implement additional Swing Interfaces for GUI development
• Implement sort and search capabilities
• Access data files and databases
• Understand and Implement advanced Java Classes and Interfaces
• Create and deploy a Web Application using Java Servlets and Jakarta Tomcat Web Server

To participate in this seminar, students must have the following:

Hardware:

Computer

• Pentium-based PC 350MHz or higher
• 350 MB Hard drive space (minimum)
• CD-ROM drive

Memory (RAM):

• 256MB (very minimum)

Communications:

• A 56k modem meets the minimum requirement
• Cable or ADSL service is recommended

Software

Operating system:

• Windows XP Professional (SP2),  Windows XP Professional (SP1+), Windows XP Home (SP1+), Windows 2000 Professional (SP3+), Windows 98 (2nd Edition), Windows ME, Windows Server 2003 (Web, Standard, Enterprise and DataCenter Editions).

• Jakarta Tomcat Server 5.5.7

Text Editor:

• Textpad, Microsoft Notepad or other text editor
• Microsoft Word

Server:

• Apache Jakarta Tomcat Server 5.5.7

JDK/JRE 5.0 Installation

Notes:

• The installed image will, by default, be installed on the Windows drive—the drive where the Windows operating system is installed (sometimes called the system drive). Most often this will be the C drive. However, it is possible to install the installed image on any drive. For instance, the installed image for the JDK could be installed to a non-Windows drive with a custom installation.
• The update repository will always be installed on the Windows drive.
