Managing Collective Learning in the Workplace

Learning, as collective meaning making, is an ever-present incidental process that occurs in the "hallways" of organizations, outside the formal setting of workshops and seminars or the confines of an official curriculum. Determining when and how trainers, facilitators, consultants and coaches can successfully intervene in this mainly informal learning process will be the focus of this course. Students will engage in practical activities where they will have the opportunity to learn how to plan, facilitate and manage the considerable potential of collective learning.

Objective

This course will:

• Explain learning as a process of making new meaning of one’s experience within the context of both its constructivist philosophical foundation and its outcomes in terms of change.
• Describe the unique features of collective learning and illustrate how it integrates the levels of individual, group and organizational learning as meaning making processes
• Outline the context, nature and dynamics of the key sub-processes through which new meanings and meaning-making structures come to be held collectively among and between members of an organization.
• Provide an overview of how to intervene in this largely informal process that is both practical and ethical
• Analyze the potential and prepare a plan for collective learning in an (or their) organization
• Outline a strategy for minimizing and addressing the challenges of facilitating collective learning
