This course introduces contemporary issues, principles, and practices in the revival, maintenance and revitalization of Indigenous languages in Canada and around the world. Participants identify community assets supporting individual, family, and community language revitalization.
Formerly part of LING 180. Completion of LING 180A is recommended prior to taking this course.
Registration Deadline: April 9, 2012; late registrations accepted if space permits
Fee: CAD$595.87, including a CAD$100 materials fee which is required with each registration form. The tuition balance of CAD$495.87 is due on or before the first day of the course.
Instructor: Chaw-win-is, a Nuu-chah-nulth woman from both the Tla-o-qui-aht and Cheklesaht nations, has worked in the field of Language revitalization at UVIC where she coordinated community partnership undertaking language revitalization programming in W'SANEC and T'saxis. Chaw-win-is is an instructor in Indigenous Education and English at the University of Victoria. She has an MA in Indigenous Governance Program, and her research interests include Indigenous storytelling and governance, specifically focused on regenerating Indigenous-centred approaches to research, and situating governance and storytelling in language revitalization.
