What research do we need and what strategies can we employ to make our Vancouver Island food system more robust to support the island’s population and withstand a major earthquake and climate change? This course explores the current and potential challenges that Vancouver Island’s food system faces. Through multimedia presentations, the instructors will present the research findings and action strategies of the 2010–2011 Vancouver Island Community Research Alliance’s (VICRA) Local Food Project, which has engaged students and leading academics from all five island campuses in collaboration with institutional and community partners. Course participants will have opportunities for discussion about the future direction of the island’s food system based on the key findings and recommendations of the project. This course will appeal to policy makers, grassroots organizations and community members interested in discussing pressing issues facing the Vancouver Island community.
