This course explores some of the major works in the French classical repertoire, notably opera at the court of Louis XIV, and controversial programmatic symphonic forms of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We discover how the unique characteristics of this repertoire reflect not only the spirit of its age, but also a French cultural trend towards multidisciplinary art forms. Musical knowledge is helpful, but not necessary.
