Foundations of Adult Education

CACE 1.0 required course

Offered online and face to face at UVic

Examine the history of adult education from both the international and local perspectives, and analyze the underlying philosophical, sociological, historical and political foundations of adult education. Then, apply your insights to contemporary adult education issues.

Objective

After completing the Foundations of Adult Education course, you should be able to:

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the purposes of adult education, and how these purposes vary among different participants and providers.
Explain some foundational approaches to the field of adult education through study of broad historical periods and some important individuals, some major philosophical approaches, and two key sociological theories.
Identify and discuss some of the key social, economic, and political issues that currently impact adult education.
