Field Methods for Language Preservation and Revitalization: Project Development

Location: University of Victoria

Build your capacity with planning strategies, protocols, and methods of data collection, analysis, and organization appropriate for field activities associated with language preservation and revitalization. You will focus on strategies for community involvement, project planning, protocols, ethical and intellectual property issues, use of technology in language documentation, techniques for language study with elders, interview and data recording methods, documentation and database management, and approaches to sharing information. Topics include:

Formally part of LING 183. Completion of LING 183A is recommended prior to taking this course.


Instructor

Dr. Strang Burton has been working with the Stó:lo– Nation language program for more than 14 years, including more than 10 years as their employee.  He has worked with Stó:lo– elders and staff to help produce two textbooks on the Halq'emeylem language, a large digital dictionary, four major interactive CD-ROM games, two online language courses, as well as seven illustrated storybooks each with accompanying multimedia.  Strang has also worked closely with production projects run by four other BC endangered language  programs, and has lectured and taught extensively on effective documentation methodologies and media production for endangered language programs.
