The human brain contains more than 100 billion brain cells, or neurons, each linked to as many as 10,000 other neurons. As we grow older, we lose both neurons and the branches of these cells (called dendrites, which allow for communication between cells). This course will review some of the latest research on how exercise affects the brain, enhancing both its structure and function throughout the aging process. Physical exercise options will also be discussed and recommended guidelines provided. The course will be presented at a level that will be suitable for the general public, but will also be relevant for health professionals.
