COURSE INFORMATION

English for Teachers

The program is for teachers of English, or teachers required to use English as the language of instruction. It consists of English language instruction, training in English Language Teaching (ELT) strategies, lectures, seminars, workshops and includes a language class observation.

Program Features

4-week intensive July program (can also be customized for groups)

20 class hours per week

afternoon lectures, seminars, workshops and visits to local places of interest

Unlimited access to UVic's Computer-Assisted Language Laboratory (CALL), library and computer labs

Optional weekend trips such as whale watching, a trip to Vancouver and a visit to Butchart Gardens

UVic Dormitory accommodation

Objective

This program is for teachers who want to:

• improve their ability to communicate effectively in English
• improve their knowledge of English Language Teaching strategies

Evaluation

A Certificate of Participation is awarded for successful completion of the program. An evaluation by the instructor is also given to each student, indicating English level and progress. The certificate and evaluation do not carry University of Victoria credit.

Format

This is a full-time, 4-week program delivered on campus at UVic.

Program Schedule

• Monday - Friday, 8:30 to 12:30                                                                                                                      English Language Classes designed to improve the language skills of the participants, focusing on all 4 skill areas: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The emphasis is on communicative language instruction.
• Afternoons, 1:30 to 4:30                                                                                                                                 Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) seminars, workshops and class visits; visits to local places of interest; cultural activities
• Weekends: Optional trips offered at a minimal cost. These will include whale watching, a visit to the world-famous Butchart Gardens, and a trip to Vancouver.

Requisites

• • Minimum TOEFL score of CBT 135 (47 iBT or 450 paper test)

  At the beginning of the program students without proof of a minimum TOEFL score must write an English Proficiency Test to determine program eligibility.
