This course is designed to help you become a knowledgeable end user of database management systems and to help you understand the needs and roles of users, database designers, managers and administrators. Database Concepts, a key component of the CBIS program, provides you with an understanding of how databases fit into the information system of an organization.
You will cover topics such as the major components and functions of a database, how information is modelled, stored and manipulated in databases, and the implications of databases on operations, control and planning for the organization. You will also gain hands-on experience creating and maintaining a relational database using Microsoft Access or LibreOffice, available from www.LibreOffice.org.
Prerequisite: Computing Concepts or equivalent experience.
Course requires Microsoft Office Professional 2002/2003 or 2007/2010 (including Access) or LibreOffice. LibreOffice is an open source application that can be downloaded from the Internet at no cost. For further information about LibreOffice, please visit www.LibreOffice.org.
