An Afternoon on … Easter Island

Easter Island, lovingly called Rapa Nui by the locals since the 1860s, also bears more romantic, ancient names, such as Te pito o te henua, meaning "the navel of the world" and, perhaps most fittingly, Mata-ki-Te-rangi, which means "eyes looking to the sky"—a most apt name when we consider the almost 900 moai statues left behind by the ancient islanders, carved in just 300 years during the European Late Middle Ages.

In this illustrated talk, we’ll explore this tiny island (smaller than Salt Spring Island), and look at its ancient discovery by Polynesian explorers, its more modern discovery by Europeans, and its untimely demise through civil war, environmental misuse and the greed of slavery.
