This introduction to the concerto offers a definition and survey of the genre, plus thoughts on instrumentation, performance practice, virtuosity, reception, and social context.
The course will be organized chronologically: the origins of the concerto principle; the concerto grosso and the solo concerto in the Baroque era (Vivaldi, Handel, Bach); the classical piano and violin concertos of Mozart and Beethoven; the nineteenth-century virtuoso concerto in the hands of innovative Romantics (Paganini, Chopin, Liszt) as well as more conservative composers (Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms); and finally, the continuing relevance of concerto form in the twentieth century (Ravel, Strauss, Britten, Copland, and others – including living Canadians and film composers).
No previous training in music is required to enjoy and benefit from this course.
